Chapter 8 – Ironic
BPOV
I walked into my office and decided that I definitely needed
more coffee. I sat down and checked my messages. There was one from Jessica
Stanley. She rode Possum, our Quarter Horse that has won many jumping
competitions. Jessica has always been difficult to deal with.
I listened to my messages, but I really wasn't paying
attention. My thoughts were on Jasper and our date tonight. Mainly, I couldn't
figure out how to tell my father, at least I had Emmett and Rose in my corner.
I let out a long sigh and listened to Jessica's message again.
The knock on my door startled me.
"Busy Bella?"
"Never for you," I said.
"Emmett told me about your talk last night," Rose
said.
"Yes, he's the world's best big brother. But God, Rose,
I'm scared to death to tell Charlie. He isn't going to be happy. What if he
fires Jasper?"
"Do you really think he would do something like
that?"
"Yes, especially because he is deluded in thinking that
Edward and I will get back together."
"He can't do that without both Emmett and your
permission, right?"
"Yes, that's true we all own thirty-three percent of
the stables. I'm sure he would find a way to hold that point one percent over
our heads."
We both burst out laughing.
"I'm sorry Bella, I have to meet Emmett."
"Have fun! I need to get work anyway. I'll talk to you
later Rose."
I took a deep breath. I hoped today would fly by so that I
could spend time with Jasper.
Edward's POV
Yesterday seemed to be never-ending. I received so many
phone calls from friends saying that Bella, my Bella, was seen out at the local
bar with a blonde-haired man. The kicker was, she was with my sister,
Alice...whom I would deal with later. Right now, I need to call Charlie.
"Charlie here."
"Hey Charlie, it's Edward."
"Edward my boy, what's up?"
"I need to see you as soon as possible. It has to do
with Bella."
"My door is always open to you, son. When can you come
by?"
"I'll be there before noon."
"See you then," he said and hung up.
I should have never signed the divorce papers, Bella and I
needed to get back together, no more of this being apart nonsense. She needed
to realize her place and who she belonged to. Yes, I messed up, so what? So did
every other man in this town. Why couldn't Bella just have looked the other way
and kept her mouth shut? That's what a good wife does.
I needed to find out who this guy was and I needed to deal
with my sister.
BPOV
My morning went by in a blur; I met with Emmett and went
over some paperwork from their trip. He was on his way to meet Jasper when he
left my office. I begged him to
be nice and that Jasper meant a lot to me. He just said to
trust him. Whatever that means. I needed to go check out Possum.
I walked over to the stables; I could see Jasper, Rose and
Emmett talking near the pasture. I was hoping that this was a good thing. I
really wanted them to like him; no, I needed them to like him. I also knew that
after I checked on Possum, I needed to find and tell Charlie about Jasper. This
I knew was not going to go over well because he held out hopes of Edward and I
getting back together.
My thoughts were interrupted by my cell phone ringing. I
flipped it open.
"Hello."
"Bella, oh my God! I just got off the phone with Edward,
and he knows you were out with a guy on Saturday night," Alice said so
fast that I only caught a few words.
"Alice, calm down. So, what if he knows? We're
divorced."
"Bella, you don't understand. Edward is really mad; he
is hotter than a two-dollar pistol."
"He'll get over it. I have the right to get on with my
life."
"I know, but he is so mad at me because I wouldn't tell
him who you were out with."
"Sorry Alice."
"It's not your fault. I have to get to work. I'll call
you later and we can gossip."
"Sounds great. Bye," I said as I flipped my phone
shut. This was going to be a long day.
I was leaving Possum's stall when my cell rang. What is it
with everyone calling me today?
"Hello."
"Your lying, cheating, sack of shit ex-husband is here
to see you."
"Damn it Rose! What does he want? Where are you?"
"We're in your office."
"Rose, keep him busy and I'll be right there," I
said and flipped my phone shut.
I walked into my office and froze at what was happening in front
of me.
"What the hell is going on Rose?" I said as I
looked at Edward lying on the floor in a fetal position holding himself.
"Can't...breathe...," he gasped.
"Oh my God! Rose, what did you do?" I asked.
"Well, you said to keep him busy. He's busy holding his
balls," she answered, smirking.
"This is not what I meant, and you know it," I
said as I walked over to Edward. "Oh my God. Edward, are you all right?"
"No!" he said in pain.
"I swear Rose, sometimes...," I took a deep
breath. "Just help me get him up."
"No! You stay the hell over there!" Edward yelled
at Rose.
"Don't worry. I wouldn't walk that far to help you
up," she sneered.
"My God, Rose. What is the matter with you?" I
asked.
"Consider it a blow for your dignity. He deserves so
much more," she said.
"What is dignified about kicking somebody in the
balls?" I asked.
"Well, I feel better," Rose snickered.
"You have to think your actions through, Rose. You
don't always have to live in the moment," I scolded.
"Bella, loosen up. I'm sure there will be no permanent
damage," Rose said as she was leaving my office. “Oh, and Edward, it's
been a pleasure."
"I'm so sorry, Edward. Rose is just unpredictable.
Anyway, may I ask what you are doing here?"
"I wanted to know why my wife was out in public
Saturday at a bar kissing some guy?" he yelled.
"What? Are you kidding me? I have divorce papers that
say I'm no longer your wife," I replied.
"That's beside the point, Bella. People know me and
people like to talk."
"Let them talk. I don't care Edward, and I can see
whomever I choose," I spat.
"Not when it reflects on me, you can't. I never wanted
the divorce, Bella, and you know that."
"Why are you here Edward?" I shouted."
"I think we should get back together. I spoke to
Charlie and he agreed with me. Your nonsense has to stop."
"My nonsense? At least I waited to date till after the
divorce. You continued dating through our entire marriage."
"Bella, I've told you I'm sorry. I slipped."
"So that's it? You slipped? How many times did you
'just slip' Edward? Do you think I'm a fool? That I didn’t know how many there
were?" I took a deep breath. "Get out! Get out now."
"Bella, you are acting like a spoiled child. I made a
few mistakes. It's not a big deal."
"Not a big deal? Really? You are a complete ass,
Edward. I swear if you don't leave..." I took a deep breath. "Edward,
I don't want to hear anything more from you right now. We are divorced and we
are staying that way. Now get out!" I yelled.
"I'm not going anywhere, Bella, until you listen to
reason. I should have never allowed you to divorce me," he yelled.
"Allow me! You allowed me to divorce you? Have you
completely lost your mind? Maybe if you kept your dick in your pants Edward, we
might still be married. You are the most self-absorbed, miss-guided,
son-of-bitch I have ever met."
"Nice mouth, Bella. Since when did you start talking
back?"
"Well, it seems since I wised up and divorced your
sorry ass, I grew a pair. Now, so help me God Edward, if you don't leave right
now, I swear I'll have Emmett throw you out."
